Films for Curious People

Screen Shot 2016-04-25 at 12.41.47 PMHot Docs, the Canadian International Documentary Film Festival is here, and Terranova Matadora is part of the stellar lineup. From April 28th to May 8th, the best of the best in documentary filmmaking will be screened in Toronto, Canada. I interviewed Producer and Director Rhonda Buckley when we met in my adopted city of Merida in 2015. As a storyteller and Newfoundlander, Rhonda was instantly smitten by the intrepid Ms. Hayward. “I’m drawn to the unsung hero”, Rhonda said in our interview, “and although Carolyn was one of only 10 female bullfighters in her day, and considered to be one of the best in the world, very little is known about her”.

A fascinating documentary, Terranova Matadora is about a petite yet powerful woman who moved from Newfoundland to Mexico to become the highest paid female bullfighter in the world. Rhonda hopes to bring the film to La Noche Blanca in Merida, later this year. You can watch the trailer here – enjoy!

In October 2012, I drove 6,800 kms with my artist husband, Ric Kokotovich (www.rickokotovich.com), and my dog Iggy, to spend 6 months in our adopted city of Merida. Leaving the fast paced world of Calgary behind, I packed my books, art and entrepreneurial spirit, and set off to explore what lay beyond the borders that had become my life. In October 2013 we hit the road south again, hoping to find out what ‘living the dream’ really means. This is my adventure.
